Market Wrap for the Week Ending May 7, 2021
The stock market started out mostly flat early in the week and finished up the last couple of days. Friday's upward market movement was driven by a huge disappointment in the April jobs report. Nearly a million new jobs were expected to be added in April, however, the US Labor Department reported only 266,000 new jobs.
Why did the markets like the disappointing numbers? Because lower than expected new jobs means the Federal Reserve is more likely to hold interest rates down for longer.
Overall, the S&P 500 was up about 1.2% for the week.
FIRE Portfolios - YTD Return
- My FIRE mutual fund portfolio at Fidelity is up 17.57% YTD
- My FIRE ETF portfolio at Schwab is up 18.64% YTD
My FIRE portfolios are still beating the market this year and they managed to put a little more distance between them and the S&P 500. Both of my FIRE portfolios experienced a nice move up this week.
TSP Model - YTD Return
My Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) Model is up 13.12% YTD
401k Model - YTD Return
- My Generic 401k Model is up 14.77% YTD
- My PPSF 401k Model is up 11.65% YTD
Benchmark Stock Market Indices - YTD Return
- The S&P 500 (Vanguard fund VFINX) is up 12.9% YTD
- The Dow Jones Industrial Average (State Street ETF DIA) is up 14.3% YTD
